Hope on!

When prospects for the maintenance of the Republic’s traditions look dim, it is helpful to read the speech Nicias gave in year nineteen of the Peloponnesian war.

Athenians and allies, even in our present position we must still hope on, since men have before now been saved from worse straits than this.

I have, therefore, still a strong hope for the future, and our misfortunes do not terrify me as much as they might.

Do not give way too much to despondency. You must be brave.
