Christmas Carol Questions

In Silent Night, there’s a contraction and an old English shortened word. What’s the full word in each case?

“…all is bright round yon virgin, mother and child…”

In O Little Town of Bethlehem, re-phrase the words, “…How silently the wondrous gift is given, So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven…”

Replace “So” with a few words so that the sentence’s meaning is clearer.

A Christmas card says, “Peace on earth.” This speaks of hope that men and nations can someday live in peace. More specifically, the heavenly host sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” From whom is the goodwill? Why does the baby mean good will toward men? How was a relationship strained and, with the birth and mission of the baby, how is it now repaired? Are “peace on earth” and “on earth peace, goodwill toward men” different in an important way?
